The performance of gas scrubbers is improved by causing the gas stream to drop below its dew pt., preferably to do this several times. This repeated action is achieved by alternate heating and cooling the gas stream. This in turn is achieved by passing the stream being heated and cooled in counterflow to the involving warm gas stream before it reaches it dew pt. The system can be boosted by using a compressor which has the dual purpose of pulling the gas through the system on its suction side, raizing the temp. above the dew pt. and then subsequently passing it into a water spray for further cooling and washing. The efficiency of wet dust removal systems or washers is improved by dropping the gas temp. below the dew pt. In most washers this is done once at the washing stage. However, the overall separation and degree of agglomeration is much improved if the gas is repeatedly caused to drop below its dew pt. with intermediate heating.
