The rich mixture is fed to the engine intake section (2) which is provided with an inlet valve and spark plug, whilst the exhaust section (3) is filled with a weak basic mixture or pure air as in 214400. In order to prevent an unfavourable temperature drop in the inlet section, the combustion chamber is altered so that the inlet section is now next to the exhaust section and placed above the piston and separated from the piston by a heat resistant plate forming the chamber base (3). The fuel injection timing is regulated so that fuel injection finishes at the end of the induction stroke and the injection start is retarded to half way through the induction stroke as the engine load increases.
