Chloramines are prepared by reacting N-cpds. of the type NH3, primary and sec. alkylamines, with Cl2 in the gas phase at temps. above the sublimation temps. of the hydrochlorides of the above N-cpds, cooling the gaseous reaction mixture immediately it leaves the reaction zone to a temp. below the said sublimation temp. such that the hydrochloride of the N-cpd. separates and the chloramine formed remains in the gas phase. In this process, the gaseous reaction mixture is cooled by admixture with the N-cpd. starting material in gas or liquid from and/or an inert gas. A suitable apparatus is disclosed. No clogging of the apparatus by ammonium salts occurs, thus facilitating a continuous process esp. suitable for the prepn. of chloramine.
