Alkanoic acid derivs. of formula (I) (where R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R2 is H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl; R3, R4 and R5 are H, halogen and CF3, at least one of r3, R4 and being CF3; and n is 0, 1 or 2), e.g. 2-(4-(4-trifluoromethylphenylthio)-phenoxy)-propionic acid, and their pharmacologically acceptable salts are new cpds. (I) have high hypolipaemic activity) compared with that of e.g. clofibrate, and the ratio of hypolipaemic dosage to hepatomegaly-inducing dosage is more favourable than that of known hypolipaemic agents.
