Fluorine-contg. substances, esp. for use in dentistry consists of a fluorine-contg. cpd. (pref. DF, LiF, NaF, KF RbF, CsF, SrF2, BaF2, ZnF2, SnF2, SnF4, NH3F or ND3F) dissolved in a solvent the H-content of which is substd. to an extent of at least 10% by deuterium. A pref. solvent is water contg. is not 10% D2O. When the substances are applied to the surface of the teeth and subjected to the action of infrared radiation, the incorporation into the dental enamel is promoted. Since the fundamental vibration frequency of the OH gps. of hydroxyapatite is 3.1 mu and that of the OD gps. in the solvent is 4 mu, IR radiation of wavelength 3.1 mu which promotes incorporation of F into the hydroxyalpetite of the dental enamel is only weakly absorbed by the solvent and incorporated of fluorine is better than with deuterium-free solvents.
