The A/D converter samples the analogue input signal at overlapping, equidistant and stochastically varied intervals, and the equidistant sampling intervals are large compared to the maximum stochastic fluctuating interval. A series of equidistant sampling intervals is followed by a sampling interval of stochastically varied length while the mixed input samples are subjected to stochastic signal analysis and they are correlated with a set of mixed reference signal samples. The system is used to enable an increase in the input resolution without increasing the sampling frequency with consequent increase of component costs. A control stage (15) contains a timer (16) a coupling stage (17) and a random generator (18).
