2-Acetyl-3-methylbuta-1,3-diene is prepd. by decomposing 2-methyl-3-hydroxymethylpent-1-en-4-one or its esters with carboxylic acids. Specif. claimed is pyrolysis of the esters with formic, acetic, propionic and benzoic acids at 300-600 degrees C. Process is suitable for large-scale operation. It avoids use of lithium acetylide and mercuric oxide and avoids contamination with trimethylfuran. Prod. is used in prepn. of synthetic rubbers and as an inter. for plant-protection agents.
