Ceramic fibre inserts in cast brake discs - used to alter resonant frequencies and reduce squealing of brakes

Brake disc, made of cast metal, esp. for vehicle brakes in which a ring made of ceramic fibre materials is used as an insert in the cast brake disc and is surrounded on all sides by the cast metal. The ring insert is pref. made of a ceramic felt consisting mainly of silica and alumina fibres and is pref. cast in the region of the disc which works in conjunction with the brake lining. The ring insert is pref. located in the mould by a thin holding ring of metal prior to casting the brake disc. The insert alters the characteristic frequency of the brake disc so that it is outside the region of resonance of vehicle vibration and therefore the vibration and squealing are eliminated.
