Insol. diazomethine cpds. of formula (I): and their metal complexes of formula (I)-(IV) (in which R is a direct bond, alkylene opt. interrupted by a hetero atom, iso- or hetero- cyclic ring, or is arylene, a heterocyclc ring or cyclooakylene; Z is a gp. capable of metal complexing; each X is COOH or together form a -CO-O-CO, gp. R1 is H, opt. substd. amino, apt. etherified OH, or opt. substd. (cyclo) aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic gp. A is an ortho- or peri-arylene gp. or heterocyclic gp. and M is a bivalent metal atom), are pigments for colouring plastics, resins, paints, printing inks, rubber, paper etc. and for spin dyeing of fibres, in greenish yellow to bluish-red shades. Cpds. give clear shades of high strength with good solvent resistance and fastness to aromatics, bleeding and overpainting. Conversion to metal complexes substantially increases light fastness.
