A composite matl. comprises a matrix of Mg, Pb, Zn, Cu, Al, Sn or alloys of these, reinforced with carbon fibres each coated with titanium boride or a mixt. of titanium boride and titanium carbide. Preferably the fibres are of graphite with a coating thickness of 100 to 10,000 A. Wetting of the fibres by the matrix metal is greatly improved.
