In the analysis of fine dusts by atomising the test samples contained in graphite cells in an incandescent graphite tube into the radiation path of an atom absorption - or fluorescence - spectrometer and excited for light absorption or fluorescence, an automatic sequence of process steps takes place whereby (a) a large number of graphite cells containing samples are stored in a first magazine (measuring magazine) (b) the graphite cells are subjected to a thermal pre-treatment, (c) the magazine is brought to a support or holding device present in the measuring chamber of an atom absorption - or fluorescence spectrometer (d) each graphite cell is advanced from the measuring magazine into the measuring chamber for analysis in an interval adapted to the measuring time (e) after the introduction of one graphite cell after another into the measuring chamber and at pre-determined intervals, the atomising, excitation and measuring process is initiated for the signal emitted by the excited sample and (f) the graphite cell after the analysis step is withdrawn from the measuring chamber and supplied to a second, or collecting, magazine.
