Controlled operation of sulphur recovery plant - esp. on start-up and shut-down

In a method for improving the operation of sulphur-recovery plants (e.g. Claus Plante) esp. during start up and shut down, a controllable quantity of heating gas is passed through the catalyst layers in order to prevent or control local overheating of the catalyst by spontaneous oxidation of sulphur remaining in the bed. Heating gas generated by fuel firing using large quantities of excess air (which simplify heater operation) can be used without requirement for expensive control equipment, when by pass in open, excess oxygen flow through catalyst is prevented. The by-pass can then be closed slowly over a period of hours. Process can be constantly supervised by operators, the life of the catalyst is thereby increased, and the operating temp. of the catalyst under normal conditions can in fact be controlled using the by-pass.
