The plasma burner is for generating an open or closed arc, has an outer water-cooled cylindrical electrode surrounding a water-cooled axially-sliding central electrode. A differential cylinder (26) is located on the head (2) that carries the cylindrical electrode (1) and separated from the head by an insulator (29). The cylinder piston (25) is connected rigidly to the support (18) of the central electrode (11). The head with tube (3-5), the end plate (7) and the cylindrical electrode guide nozzle (8) form one weld unit. The advantage lies in being able to set the width of the circular gap between electrodes in as short a time as possible after the arc has been generated by bringing the two electrodes together.
