Joint between glass fibre rod and metal fitting - has fitting crimped onto conical enlargement of rod via split sleeve

In a joint between an end of a glass fibre rod and a fitting (4), the rod has a reduced dia. cylindrical end portion(10) the free end of which is conically enlarged. The cylindrical and conical portions are surrounded by a split sleeve (11, 12). The sleeve and an adjacent full diameter portion (7) of the rod are surrounded by a tubular extension (5) of the fitting (4) and the extension is crimped on to the sleeve. Pref. the interior of the extension is roughened, e.g. by a screw thread. The split sleeve may extend only over the cylindrical portion while the conical portion is surrounded by a unitary sleeve of resilient material.
