In the treatment of material requiring a heating process and esp. of pre-disintegrated animal materials, in a steriliser etc., by introducing the material into a container, heating it and moving it mechanically therein and bringing it to a posn. at which it is discharged after reaching the desired consistency and is removed from the container for further treatment, (a) the material is moved within the container in such a way that a continuous exchange of material takes place at the boundary layer of the heating surface and (b) the material is moved positively in the axial direction of the container in such a way that it is mixed. Provides 100% utilisation of the interior and wall surface of the container and correspondingly high heat utilisation with more efficient heat transfer.
