The viewer has an optical system and a holder for the stones which extends into a cuvette containing an immersion fluid, a light source and adjusting knobs for fine adjustment of the holder transversely and vertically and in rotation. The three adjusting knobs (42, 43, 44) lie in a single, pref. vertical plane (E). Infinitely variable adjustment is provided for both transverse and vertical movement of the holder (4) which is mounted on the lower end of a shaft (45) connected by gears transmitting through 90 deg. (441, 442) to the holder rotation adjusting knob (44).
