The tone arm of the dictating machine is movable across the recording direction by a control lever accessible from outside the machine housing. When operated, it lifts the head from the recording medium and replaces it on it. The tone arm (4) is brough out from the machine housing (1) by means of a handle (8). The control lever (6) has a handle (7) which covers an area corresponding to the tone arm handle movement range. When the sound head is placed on the recording medium (3) it projects beyond it, so that the tone arm handle can be reached only when the control lever is moved down.
