The mfr. of expanded ceramic elements by heating a prefabricated blank contg. numerous internal cavities which are filled when the expandable ceramic is heated, the outer contour of the blank being supported to a limited extent, at least during the expansion period, possibly by a ceramic shell made of a non-expandable ceramic, as in parent patent, is improved by ensuring that the thickness of the walls of the blank, its internal dimensions and cross-sections, the configuration and/or the spacings of the internal cavities are non-uniform or different. Used e.g. for making an expanded panel which is the height of one storey in a building. The porosity across the element can be controlled as desired, e.g. the porosity can be reduced towards the outer surfaces or corners of a panel to obtain increased mechanical strength in those regions with lower porosity.
