In a process for carrying out enzyme-catalysed redox reactions by circulating an aqueous treatment solution contg. a consubstrate which takes up or releases hydrogen from a storage receptacle over at least one immobilised enzyme catalysing the redox reaction and back to the storage receptacle, a substance to be subjected to the reaction being introduced into the treatment solution before the immobilized enzymes, after passage through the immobilized enzyme catalysing the redox reaction and before returning to the storage receptacle the treatment solution is contacted with at least one immobilized enzyme which regenerates the cosubstrate and a water-soluble substrate, homologous to the regenerating enzyme, which takes up or releases hydrogen is added to the treatment solution. An apparatus for carrying out this process is also claimed. The enzyme-catalysed redox reactions are used in biochemical analysis and clinical diagnostics for the quantitative determination of oxidizable or reducible substances such as glucose, organic acids or alcohols. The reactions can also be used in preparative chemistry.
