The d.c. commutator machine, with bar winding armature, is designed to reduce the lifetime of the commutating mechanism to be more in line with the usually much shorter lifetime of the rest of the machine (e.g. insulation) and thereby allow the commutating mechanism to have a simpler construction and reduce manufacturing costs. This is achieved by partly using the ends of the bar windings (4, 5) projecting axially from the overhang as commutator segments, rather than having special segments welded or soldered to the bar ends. The led-out bars are seated in axial slots (3) in an insulating hub (2) fixed to the rotor shaft (1).
