The bar feed system is used for multispindle automatic lathes with horizontal indexable spindle drums. The clamping movement is carried out, before the spindle drum indexing starts, by a roller on a swining support which moves into two spindle positions and rests on a clamping slide. This arrangement reduces idle time on feeding and eliminates high forces due to bar impact on steps. The drum (1) with spindles (2) has feeder collets (21) directly behind clamping collets (4). Rollers (8, 9) rest on the support (10) which is actuated by the clamping slide (11). The feeder slide (14) slides, together with the clamping slide on shafts (12, 13). Max feed rate is achieved for about thirty degrees of indexing movement and retardation starts there. A sinusoidal movement generating cam ensures that the bar has slowed down at the end of the feed movement.
