Thread or strip winding, is controlled in a winding unit with an automatic bobbin change, with the thread control unit so positioned that at the start of a bobbin change phase it determines the length of thread reqd. to lead from the full bobbin to the empty bobbin, with a controlled time movement so that when it passes to the empty bobbin it arrives at the point where the pre-determined length has already been wound. The system ensures that each bobbin is wound with consistent thread layers without thickening at the sides, with the length of wound matl. being exact on each bobbin.
