The apparatus for applying a coating of asphalt to the underside and one end of prefabricated concrete kerbstones for direct attachment to the concrete road surface, consists of a roller conveyor (8) positioned above a bath (2) of molten asphalt followed by a bath of cooling water. Rollers dip into the molten asphalt and into the water, so that the appropriate liquid is transferred from them onto the underside of the kerbstones as they are conveyed by the rollers. Alongside the rollers above the asphalt tank is an actuator cylinder (15) which tilts a set of curved arms (12) so that plates (13) across their ends are swung up into contact with the end faces of the kerbstones to apply asphalt to those faces. The heating and reservoir tank for the molten asphalt is positioned alongside the conveyor.
