Sepn of oils - from water, sand and solid surfaces using calcium sulphate/sodium bicarbonate mixts

Oil is relased from mixts. or emulsions with water by adding powdered hydrated CaSO4 to cause the oil to sink, or if the CaSO4 is mixed with NaHCO3, to cause the oil to float to the surface as a foam with the CO2 formed. Pref. mixts. to achieve flotation contain 1-60% NaHCO3, and the mixts. may be used as dry powders or dispersed in water. Hydrated sulphates of Mg or Al may be used instead of CaSO4. They are suitable for dispersing oil spills or other oil contamination of water, sepn. of oil from tar sands, cleaning of oil tanks, etc. The reaction products are biologically harmless.
