Title cpds. is prepd. e.g. (a) by condensing phthalide with 3,5-ditert. butylbenzaldehyde in the presence of NaOMe and EtOAc, (b) by reacting 3,5-ditert. butyl benzylidenephthalide with NaOMe in MeOH, and decomposing the salt with acid, or (c) by condensing a dialkyl phthalate with an alkyl ditert. butyl phenylacetate in the presence of NaOMe.
