Condenser with residual uncondensed vapour - recycled to join incoming vapour, operates by external condensn on cold tubes and unstable flow

A condenser for gases of mixts. opt. contg. an inert gas constituent comprises a generally horizontal tube condenser with the cooling medium flowing through the tubes and the vapour condensed on the outside; remaining uncondensed gas at the liq. end of the condenser is collected from the top of the vessel and recycled to the upstream end where it is introduced through the vessel wall transversely across the condenser tubes, thus producing hydrodynamic instability and improving the heat transfer coefficient. Pref. the hydrodynamic instability is produced by different directions of flow of liq. and vapour, e.g. the liq. tending to fall as it progresses along the condenser and the vapour tending to rise.
