The mechanism is for handling heavy and/or bulky loads which have to be kept at predetermined levels, and is for use in shellfish farming. The loads can each be supported on a single fall of rope from a winch drum with a polygonal-section shaft and a band brake. Alternatively, an endless chain can be reeved over two pulleys, at a distance apart at least half that of the max. height to which the load has to be lifted, and running above the latter in the horizontal direction, the load supporting ropes being attached to the chain, which meshes positively with the pulleys.
