A device for absorbing moisture from air by means of a hydrophilic substance consists of an external container, open at the top, and a smaller internal container, supported from the top of the external container so that there is a space between the internal container and the bottom of the external container. A hydrophilic substance is put into the internal container, which may be rigid or flexible, and which has perforated walls. The device is partic. useful for protecting articles in houses, pieces of furniture, cupboards, especially when properties are left empty, from the effects of moisture such as mould formation, swelling of wood, deterioration of electrical equipment and development of unpleasant odours.
