With the application of hydrophobic interaction chromatography peat humic (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) of different genesis and chemical maturity were fractionated on several fractions with different hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties. The most chemically mature peat HA fraction was shown to contain the highest proportion of hydrophilic components, which are characterized by the highest content of carboxyl groups and the lowest proportion of saturated aliphatic structures. A less chemically mature HA fraction contains the largest amount of the most hydrophobic compounds which are rich in saturated hydrocarbon chains. Peat FA are nearly completely represented by hydrophilic components.
