An automatic washing machine has a programme selector provided with pref. a window through which a pref. illuminated display indicating the selected programme. Dependent on the position of the selector light is also pref. conducted along selected optical fibres to give a visual indication of the position to which control dials should be set. Instead of having to consult a table or programmes the correct positioning of the control dials is automatically indicted when a programme is selected, thereby simplifying use of the washing machine.
