A process and appts. for continuous measurements of the biodegradable pollution in waste water are claimed, the measurement taking place in two successive stages as follows: (1) after bringing oxygen content of the waste water near to satn. value, the water is brought into contact with a similarly oxygenated culture of micro-organisms, pref. activated sludge, and the pollution of the rapidly biodegradable, mainly dissolved pollutant fraction is measured by determining the drop in concn. of dissolved oxygen in a given interval, (2) the longer term, i.e. several hrs., drop in concn. of dissolved oxygen in the slowly biodegradable mainly particulate fraction of the pollutant is measured to complete the picture. Pref. activated sludge from the purificn. treatment is stabilised and oxygenated in a multi-compartment tank and passed first to a small, closed cell with probes for measuring oxygen concn. Loss related to the rapidly biodegradable fraction and then to a large, open cell where longer term oxygen loss is measured. Continuously monitoring the extend of pollution in urban and industrial waste waters destined for purificn. treatment. The process is automatic, continuous and gives result fairly representative of heterogeneous flow by virtue of its large capacity of e.g. 1 to 2 m3/h.
