Complexing agents consist of a mixt. of (I) organic cpds. consisting of =1 hydroxycarboxylic acid contg. =1 terminal -COOH gp. and =2 vicinal OH gps. in cis-position, provided 1 OH gp. is in alpha-posn. to -COOH gp. or =1 OH gp. is in alpha-posn. to one of -COOH gps., and the hydroxycarboxylic acids are present as the free acids and/or their mono- or di-alkali metal- or opt. substd. NH4 salts, in combination with (2) boric acid and/or borates and/or perborates. Agents are used for softening water, dissolving scale and pref. as substitutes for polyphosphates in detergents and/or cleansing agents, opt. in particulate form. Mixt. has better complexing props. than similar mixts. of gluconic acid, gluconate salts and other complexing agents.
