Quinolin-4-one-3-carboxylic acid derivs. of formula: (where X is NO2, NH2, acylamino, diacylamino, alkylamino, dialkylamino; R and R' are H or alkyl) and their salts are prepd. by nitration of cpds. of formula (II), then opt. reducing the product to give the amino cpds. which are then optionally alkylated or acylated or esterified). The cpds. are stated to be new but are not claimed. The cpds. are bacteriostatic agents for oral admin. with low toxicity.
