A refractory element, one of a stack of such elements used to recover heat from gases from glass or metal surnaces, has four arms, of uniform thickness, joined to a central part. Two of the arms have projections on their upper or lower edges and cavities in their lower or upper edges, the cavities being in the lower edge when the projections are on the upper edge and vice versa. The length of each cavity is considerably greater than the dia. of each projection. The elements at the edge of the stack have one or two of the arms removed. The invention improves the element described in the parent patent by making it possible to vary independently in two directions the spacing of the elements so that the volume of the slack may bead-justed to fit the volume of the heat recovery unit in which it is placed. It allows communication between the channels of the stack making the gas streams turbulent and improves heat exchange with the elements.
