Metal insulating element - for protecting the cover of a sodium-cooled fast neutron reactor from corrosion and thermal shock

Metallic insulator, particularly for protecting the closure cover of a fast neutron, sodium-cooled nuclear reactor, comprising a closed sack consisting of an elastic metallic material particularly a compressed mass of stainless steel wool, packed in an external envelope formed from fine mesh metal cloth. Prevents the corrosion and/or thermal shock caused to the concrete cover and its sheet metal sheath which closes off the reactor but is in contact with the inert gas above the molten sodium carrying sodium as an aerosol at temperatures around 500 degrees C, while the cover and sheath are usually maintained by cooling at 50-60 degrees.
