The apparatus has a base (10) with one end (11) shaped for holding in the hand, the other end having an extension (13) perpendicular to the base to form a stop for a shellfish. Serrated teeth (13A) provide grip. Near the handle is a boss (14) with a plain hole (15) providing a bearing for a plunger (16). This plunger has annular teeth (18A) along its rear part (18). These teeth engage with those in a toothed gear (19) mounted on one side of or above the boss. A handle (23) fitted to this gear moves the plunger to force the pointed end (17) into the shellfish held against the extension (13). Blocks (24, 25) are provided, so that the apparatus may be used for different size shellfish.
