Aryl cyanates of formula R-(OCN)n (where R is =1 opt. substd. aryl gps., which are bonded together by direct bonds, O, CO, OC(=O)O, S, SO2 or hydrocarbyl bridges; and n is 1-5) are prepd. by reacting an aq. soln. of the corresp. phenolate with a cyanogen halide dissolved in an org. solvent in the presence of a tert. amine, the two phase system being highly dispersed so that an interfacial reaction occurs. The process gives good yields of prods. having a high purity, as formation of by-prods. is minimised.
