A casing (2) is fixed behind the rear safety release binding along one side of the ski. A braking arm (5) pivots (7) in the casing and is spring biased to project below the ski but is normally held horizontal by another spring (9) behind the head (12) of a plunger (13) fitting in a recess (14) in the arm. This head holds a cam lever (18) in contact with the side (16) of a recess containing a ring (22) attached to a lanyard (23) round the ski boot. A fall at low speed is sufficient to release the ring but at high speed the force overcomes the spring (9) so that the lever (18) is pivoted to release the plunger from the arm (5) which then pivots to a braking position.
