A solid compsn. contains a plasticizer a homogeneous mixt. of (a) a solid thermoplastic polymeric binder which is (i) vinyl chloride/vinyl 2-4C alkanoate polymer contg. =70 wt % polym. vinyl chloride; (ii) vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride polymer contg. =50 wt % polymsd. vinyl chloride; (iii) vinyl chloride/propylene polymer contg. =90 wt % polymsd. vinyl chloride and 10-4% polymsd. polypropylene; (iv) chlorinated polyethylene polymer having =5% crystallinity, a molten viscosity of 10,000-30,000 P at 190 degrees C and a Cl. content of =40%; (v) vinyl chloride/vinyl 2-4C alkanoate/2-4C alkene random terpolymer of viscosity 0.5 contg. a major portion of polymsd. vinyl chloride; or (vi) a mixture of the polymers; (b) solid thermoplastic vinyl chloride/vinyl 2-4C alkanoate/2-4C alkene high MW random terpolymer of viscosity 0.5-0.9, contg. a major portion of polymsd. vinyl chloride; and (c) a filler. The combined wt. of binder and terpolymer comprises 25-65 wt % binder, and the filler comprises 200-750 parts per 100 parts of binder and and terpolymer. The compsn. is used for surface coverings, floor coverings, e.g. tiles. The compsns. are free of asbestos, have good strength a high temp. processing, good roll adhesion, very low water absorption and improved light resistance. The vinyl compsns. free of asbestos can be processed on existing 'asbestos tile' equipment, and may contain =85 wt % of pigment and filler, this being more economical than conventional compsns.
