1530483 Fluidised bed reactors UNION CARBIDE CORP 23 Dec 1975 [27 Dec 1974] 52599/75 Heading C5E A method of reacting solid carbonaceous particles in a fluid-bed reaction zone while substantially preventing agglomeration thereof comprises: (a) providing a fluid-bed reaction zone for reacting solid carbonaceous particles with a suitable reagent at a reaction temperature above 500‹ C., said zone containing a matrix of non-agglomerating particles at said reaction temperature; (b) transporting said solid carbonaceous particles in a dense phase to the vicinity of said reaction zone; (c) introducing said solid carbonaceous particles and a carrier gas into the lower portion of said reaction zone in a substantially vertically upwards direction, said solid carbonaceous particles having a temperature below their plastic transformationtemperature, the velocity of said particles being sufficient to rapidly and uniformly disperse said solid carbonaceous particles within said matrix at said temperature; (d) reacting said solid carbonaceous particles with said reagent at said reaction temperature within said zone. The process is of particular use in the hydrocarbonization of coal particles, where the reagent is a hydrogen-rich oxygen-free gas and the reaction temperature is 500-600‹ C., but also described is a coal gasification reaction using steam as a reagent at a temperature of 816‹-1000‹ C., and a char carbonization reaction using as a reagent carbonization product gases, together with an inert carrier gas, at a temperature of 500-700‹ C. If desired, a hydrocarbon oil may be introduced in step (c) in addition to the solid feed for coking, and recycle oil may be used.
