A drive for a double sided rotary grill spit has a motor which drives a spur gear (12) in mesh with another larger outer gear (17) underneath. This gear (7) drives a circular cam (18) on the same shaft. A star wheel (13) cooperates with the cam and is connected to the spit. The larger gear rotates the cam which has two arms of the star wheel resting on its periphery so that no spit movement occurs. A cutout (22) in the cam periphery passes under the star wheel, releasing the arms so that two fingers (20, 21) on a lever (19) on the cam rotate the star wheel again as they pass underneath, to turn the spit 180 deg. The cycle then repeats.
