The magnetic tape cassette has a counter (7) positioned one corner of the cassette, for recording the number of times the tape is played. It employs an arm (2) which is biased into engagement with the tape, the counter operating when the arm is moved inwards relative to the tape and having a projection for stopping the arm, when the count indicated is a whole number. Pref. the cassette contains two tape reels, with the arm biased into engagement with one of the tape reels (8), the arm moving into a neutral position, when the latter tape reel (8) is empty. The arm (2) may have a toothed section (2") which engages a cog wheel (5) of the counter (7).
