Each device consists of clamping members 14 horizontally movable by cylinders 16 and pivoted at 13 to a pair of the arms 10 or 11. Rods 18 connected to extensions 17 of the gripping devices maintain the latter in a constant vertical attitude. A motor-driven crank 21 reciprocates the arms 10, 11 and a stepwise driven roller conveyer for pallets 19 is actuated by a further motor 22. With the arms 10, 11 in the full-line positions the gripping devices are energized and the arms moved to the chain-dotted line positions. A slab is thus fed to the washing station where it is supported on a bottom bar 3 and is engaged by a bar 6 lowered by cylinders 5. A washed slab previously on the bar 3 is simultaneously transferred on to a pallet 19 and after both slabs have been disengaged by the clamping members 14, the arms 10, 11 are returned to their starting positions. Washing slurry is collected by a vessel 25. Electro-mechanical means may replace the cylinders 16.
