1418382 Measuring compaction electrically SOC ANON DITE RICHIER 23 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 24651/73 Heading G1N A roller is driven back and forth over a selected surface area to compact the earth to a desired degree, the compaction being satisfactory when the engine torque increase for successive sweeps is less than a predetermined quantity, for three consecutive sweeps, torque measurements being made for travel in both directions. The roller speed is measured at 4, Fig. 2 by the frequency f of a pulse train, which is counted at 9, 10, 11 to determine when the roller has covered the test surface, the logic circuitry eliminating stopping and reversing in zones on either side of the measuring area. The frequency f is also converted at 6 to a corresponding D.C. voltage and multiplied at 7 by the torque signal measured at 1, the product being converted at 8 to a pulse frequency F. This is divided at 28 by the length l of the test surface, pre-set at 15, and at 29 by the number of passes p required to cover the test area, pre-set at 19, to give a pulse train which is integrated at 33 to give a count shown to be proportional to the average torque for the complete sweep of the test area, when the roller speed is maintained constant. This count is fed to a subtractor 34, where it is stored for one sweep, and compared with the next count at 33, to determine the difference at 35 and compare it with a predetermined difference number e. If the difference is less than e twice, for three consecutive sweeps, an indicator 42 is energized to signal that the desired degree of compaction has been attained.
