PROCESS FOR PRODUCING DL-TARTARIC ACID

1423030 dl-Tartaric acid MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL CO Inc 11 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 16316/74 Addition to 1423029 Heading C2C dl-Tartaric acid is produced by hydrolysing epoxysuccinic acid in aqueous solution in the presence of a catalyst comprising active charcoal, aluminium oxide or ferric oxide, the catalyst being substantially insoluble in the aqueous solution. Catalysts exemplified are active charcoal, α-Al 2 O 3 , α-Fe 2 O 3 , silica-alumina and Fe 2 O 3 . 3TiO 2 ; these may be filtered off before separating the product from the solution by evaporation or crystallization.
