1429565 Winding webs KATAOKA MACHINE PRODUCT CO Ltd 17 July 1973 [17 July 1972] 33899/73 Heading B8R A method of controlling the tension in a wound web roll comprises the steps of continuously detecting the radius of a wound web roll, calculating the tension based on a theoretical equation and on the detected radius and applying the calculated tension to a comparison unit which stores a preset tension value to produce an output signal corresponding to the difference of the tensions compared in the unit for the purpose of controlling the winding torque applied to the wound web roll. In operation a required tension value F 0 and a tension gradient # are applied to a setting unit 10, Fig. 1, whose output forms the preset value stored in the comparison unit 11. The stored value is compared with a signal corresponding to a detected radius and emitted by detecting means 15 associated with the web roll spindle 14. The comparison unit 11 emits the torque controlling signal which is amplified in an amplifier unit 12 in turn producing an output signal which is applied to a torque actuator 13 which controls the torque applied to the spindle 14. The winding apparatus may include a plurality of web roll stands 78, Fig. 11, each supporting a plurality of pivotal arms 79 carrying respective spindles 83 on which are wound the web rolls 94. Web rolls 94 are formed from a wide web 30, fed over guide rollers 97, 98, 100, 95 and slit into a plurality of webs by a slitter 99. The arms 79 are biased by power cylinders 82 to control the nip pressure between web rolls 94 and the presser roller 95. The spindles 83 are driven by motors 90 and torque actuators 84 over belt drives 92, 89, 87 and gears 86, whereby the torque is controlled by radius detectors 81, connected to the pivotal shafts 80 of the arms 79 by endless chains 93 to indicate the angular displacement of the arms as a function of changing web roll radius.
