The separation of the detectors is adjustable. In one embodiment a set of limit switches LS-1A to 6A and LS-1B to 6B, Fig. 2, are associated with the respective rams. The separation of the switches is adjustable and the separation of adjacent parts decreases towards the end of the working strike. The switches are of the roller-arm cam type. Initially switches 2A, 2B, 4A, 4A, 6A, 6B are open, Fig. 3, and the other switches closed. The rams continue to advance unless one ram fails to close one switch of a limit switch pair before the other ram has opened the other switch of the pair in which case the leading ram is stopped until the lagging ram catches up. The press may be used to compact loose material in a container, a number of which containers 44, 46 are mounted on a turntable 42.
