In the arrangement shown, light from a laser 10 is directed by prism 12 and rotating mirror 14 on to a document 16 so that it scans over a row of characters. Light reflected from the document passes via the mirror 14 and lenses 13, 18 to photosensors 19 which feed recognition circuitry. If the circuitry fails to recognize a character, rotation of mirror 14 is stopped, a mirror 21 is moved into the light path between lens 18 and the photosensors 19, and a lamp 34 is energized. The image of a portion of the line of characters is directed by mirror 21 to lenses 29, 31 so that an enlarged image is displayed on screen 33. The mirror 14 will have stopped at such a position that the character to be identified by the operator appears between marks 37. A blocking filter 32 prevents all or most of the laser light from reaching the screen but allows light from lamp 34 to pass.
