MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR CATALYTIC COMPNENT OF TITANIUM TRICHLORIDE

Violet TiCl3 is prepd. by heat treatment of brown TiCl3 in the presence of an organic halogen-contg. cpd. The prod. is esp. useful as a catalyst (in combination with a dialkyl- Al halide) for olefin polymerisation. The halogen cpd. catalyses the conversion of brown to violet TiCl3, so that the heat-treatment can be carried out more rapidly and/or at lower temp; this reduces the crystallite size of the prod. and thus increases its catalytic activity.
