PICT:1010344/C4-C5/1 In a continuous process for degassing, coking or calcining substances containing combustible volatile matter the material is charged on to a hearth moving through a tunnel-like oven and oxygen is introduced into the oven to combust the liberated volatile matter providing heat for the process, solid residue being discharged from the hearth. Heat may be supplied to the charged material through the hearth, by radiation from the walls of the oven above the charge or by direct contact with a combustion flame. The volatile matter liberated in one zone of the path traversed by the material may be combusted in another and additional volatile matter may be added to obtain higher temperatures if necessary. Products of different stages of treatment may be removed from various zones. Temperatures of up to 2700 DEG F. may be employed and different temperatures maintained in different zones. The materials treated include coal, coke, pitch, tar, asphalt, lignite, gilsnite and petroleum either alone or in admixture possibly in the form of briquettes. The additional volatile matter may be supplied by spraying oil on to the moving charge. As shown in the drawing apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a circular hearth revolving within a circular oven, pipes for exhausting and supplying gases being provided at intervals and connected to common manifolds.
